Saturday when we talked to Rachel, she told us she had a ride to church Sunday. We wanted to know if she had arranged for transportation home. She said she thought so. “I think Hannah is bringing me home.” We told her she needed to be sure that Hannah was bringing her home so she didn’t get stranded. Rachel is totally dependent on others to get to and from places.
If you follow Rachelspinkhouse or Missouri State University Bear POWER on social media, you will likely see that she seems to be doing great at college and is living large. She appears to be loving college. She seems to have made it to all of her activities. She’s found rides to and from church. With help, she’s done laundry twice. She told me how to print your papers and pick them up at the desk. May seem small but this deviates from her habit making it a really major win. She has not spent all of her money or all of her Bear Pass Boomer Meal Bucks (meals in the student union.) She has embraced the all you can eat concept of cafeteria life. We’ve had several discussions about this, and she seems to think that if you eat salad or fruit, it negates the other calories. I like her thinking. Wish it were true.
She has made it to all of her classes. This includes going to the wrong section of the right public speaking class where she found a fellow Olathean and friend, AM. Several of you wanted an update on AM. If you don’t know the story, please read last week’s blog “A Typical College Girl.” I promise you won’t be disappointed! Well, neither Rachel or AM could change classes on Monday and Wednesday. AM asked the professor if she could be in Rachel’s class on Fridays, and she said yes. She and Rachel have gotten together several times, and she has been sending her typed class notes. She has also eaten with her a couple of times and helped her with her demonstration outline.
Today, we were sitting in our church service and it was communion Sunday. Our pastor is outlining how we observe communion, and Jonathan’s phone starts buzzing. He picks it up and shows it to me. It’s Rachel. He said, he would go take it in the foyer, and I said, “She’s probably stranded at church.” He was gone for the entire observation of communion, and I start getting a little antsy. She knows we would be at church. He had been gone 10 minutes. Must be having to give her guidance to help her find a ride, I’m thinking. I’m also thinking that they surely must need my help. So, I get up and go to the foyer.
As I enter the foyer, Jonathan is hanging up. “She called to tell us she had committed to be a part of the Life.Church today and had signed up to help with the children.”
The title of this blog should have been: “Life Lessons for Mom: Rachel’s Got This.”
